SECTION:
OPERATIONS
TITLE:
TRANSPORTING MUSICAL
INSTRUMENTS ON BUSES
ADOPTED:
APRIL 22, 2010
REVISED:
810.4 TRANSPORTING MUSCIAL INSTRUMENTS ON BUSES
1. Purpose
Title 67
Chpt. 171
Sec. 171.42
The Board recognizes that emergency doors are to be accessible by an aisle at least
thirty (30) centimeters (11 3/4") wide and unobstructed at all times. In addition,
passengers may not be seated so as to encroach on the minimum aisle clearance.
In order to comply with the above and to help protect student safety on buses, the
Board issues the following guidelines.
2. Guidelines
Allowable Musical Instruments on Buses
Students may transport on school buses those instruments that can be held
comfortably in the student's lap without encroaching on the aisle space, and/or
adjacent student seating space. Instruments shall not be placed on unoccupied seats
or on the floor except as designated by the school bus driver. Instruments meeting
this criteria are flutes, clarinets, oboes, trumpets, alto saxes, violins, French horns,
violas, and trombones.
3. Delegation of
Responsibility
Non-allowable Musical Instruments on Buses
The following instruments are not permitted to be transported on school buses and
shall include the tuba, tenor sax, drums, baritone sax, baritone horn, bass clarinet,
cello and standup bass, or any other instrument that will encroach another student's
seating space.
The responsibility for maintaining this policy begins with the individual bus driver.
The individual bus driver will not allow instruments, other than those noted above,
to be transported to and from school.
Bus conduct reports will be the primary tool for the bus driver to report any violation
of this policy. These reports will be closely scrutinized by the Supervisor of
Transportation or his/her designee and forwarded to the respective building principal
for corrective disciplinary action as per district policy.
