323. TOBACCO USE
1.
Purpose
Research has shown that smoking and the use of tobacco in any form is hazardous to
the health of the smoker as well as the nonsmoker. Repeated warnings to this effect
have been made by the Surgeon General of the United States. In light of this
information and in compliance with law, the Board adopts the following policy.

For purposes of this policy, tobacco use shall mean all use of tobacco, including
cigars, cigarettes, pipes and smokeless tobacco.

The Board prohibits tobacco use by administrative employees in a school building
and on any property, buses, vans and vehicles that are owned, leased or controlled by
the school district.
The Board prohibits tobacco use by administrative employees at school sponsored
activities that are held off school property.
4.
Guidelines
The district shall annually notify employees about the district's tobacco use policy by
publishing such in handbooks, newsletters, posted notices, and other efficient
methods.
Appropriate signs shall be placed in clearly visible locations and, whenever
practical, public address announcements shall inform the public of the district's
tobacco use policy.
Violators of this policy may be subject to civil penalties as stipulated in state
statutes.

Incidents of possession, use and sale of tobacco by any person on school property
shall be reported to the Office of Safe Schools on the required form at least once
each year.
Upon request, employees will be provided information on courses that will help
those who wish to stop smoking.
