PEDICULOSIS CAPITIS (HEAD LICE)
1.
Purpose
A student must be lice free and nit free to attend the schools of the district.
2.
Guidelines
When a possible case of head lice (live or nits) has been reported, the following
guidelines will be followed:
1.
The student will be sent to the school nurse and assessed immediately. If live lice
or nits are found, siblings in the school/district will be examined.
2.
The school nurse will call the parents/guardians of the affected student and
explain the exclusion of the student from school and a suggested course of
treatment.
3.
The nurse will review the following information with the parent/guardian:
a.
Assist the parent/guardian to recognize lice/nits.
b.
Give to the parent/guardian written information of how to care for the child
and environment.
c.
Give to the parent/guardian a letter from the building principal regarding
excused absences.
The school nurse may distribute shampoo and review instructions with
the parent/guardian.
4.
Upon return of the student to school, s/he will be brought by the parent/guardian
to the school nurse to be examined. If the student is free of live lice and nits, s/he
will be re-admitted to school. If the student has live lice or nits, s/he will be
excluded and instructions will be reviewed with the parent/guardian.
5.
The student may be periodically checked in school over the next several weeks
for re-infestation. Parents/Guardians shall also be advised to recheck their child.

6.
If live lice or nits are found, the student's class/contacts will be screened, as
necessary, as soon as possible.
7.
If the number of head lice cases reaches twenty percent (20%) of an individual
classroom or school, the school nurse will notify the building principal and the
head of Pupil Services, who will notify the parents/guardians of the outbreak
with an informational letter and corrective actions. This policy may be modified
at the discretion of the Superintendent.
Guidelines for this policy shall be disseminated in student handbooks.
