201. ADMISSION OF STUDENTS

The Board shall establish age requirements for the admission of beginners, which are
consistent with sound educational practice, ensure the equitable treatment of all
eligible children, and are consistent with law and regulation.

Initial admission to kindergarten or first grade shall be on the basis of chronological
age. Students will be admitted to kindergarten or first grade no later than the first
two (2) weeks of school. The Board may, upon request of the parent/guardian, admit
as a kindergarten or first grade student, children whose chronological age is less than
the requirement, but who demonstrate exceptional readiness. The procedures for
early admission are defined below.
Kindergarten

The entrance age for kindergarten students shall be five (5) years or more on or
before September 1 of the school year for which admission is being sought. This
age requirement also applies to out-of-state, public, and private school transfer
students.
In the event that a student has attended a kindergarten in Pennsylvania and moves
into the Easton Area School District, the student will not be required to repeat
kindergarten, even though the student does not meet the age requirements. A student
moving into the district from another state, who is already attending kindergarten,
will be considered for kindergarten placement based on previous experiences and
their compatibility with the program offered by the district, as determined by Easton
Area School District grade level reading and math assessments (DIBELS, DRA,
EASD Mathematics Assessment).
Early Enrollment In Kindergarten
To be considered for early enrollment:
1.
The parent/guardian shall write a letter to the Director of Teaching and Learning
requesting early enrollment and the reasons they believe the child is ready for

early entrance into school. The written request shall be made no later than April
1 of the year in which enrollment is being sought.
2.
The student shall be at least four (4) years nine (9) months old on or before
September 1 of the school year for which admission is being sought before
consideration will be given for early enrollment.
3.
The student shall be referred to the assessment team. The following procedures
are provided for students seeking early enrollment:
a.
Screening by guidance counselor at building Kauffman Brief Intelligence
Test (April 1 June 1).
b.
Psychologists administer full cognitive assessment (prior to July 1).
c.
District assessment team makes decisions on early enrollment and informs
parent/guardian (prior to July 1).
d.
The Director of Teaching and Learning will provide a list of possible early
admissions for the Superintendent for the July Board meeting.
A student will be eligible for early enrollment if the following criteria are met. To
progress to the next level, the needed qualifying score must be achieved:
1.
Overall score of 130 on the Kauffman Brief Intelligence Test.
2.
Vineland Adaptive Behavior Scale Age equivalent scores must be 6.9 in all
areas Parent/Preschool teacher.
3.
Observation Scales performed by the district assessment team.
4.
Cognitive Battery Stanford Binet 4th Edition a minimal score of 115.
First Grade

The entrance age for first grade students shall be six (6) years or more on or before
September 1 of the school year for which admission is being sought. This age
requirement also applies to out-of-state, public, and private school transfer students.
In the event that a student has attended first grade in Pennsylvania and moves into
the Easton Area School District, the student will not be required to repeat first grade,
even though the student does not meet the age requirements. A student moving into
the district from another state who is already attending first grade will be considered
for first grade placement based on previous experiences and their compatibility with
the program offered by the district as determined by Easton Area School District
